Traffolyte Signs

A brief history on Traffolyte and Engraved Plastic Signs

Traffolyte was originally a brand of engraved multi-layered plastic which started to gain popularity among electrician-based companies back in 1927. The term now more broadly relates to engraved plastic signs and is the simple technique of sticking together two differing colour layers of thin plastic. Once a layer is engraved the colour beneath is revealed helping to aid the reader review the relevant texts.
Traffolyte was cheap to produce and extremely popular throughout the mid-twentieth century. However, the phenolic plastic used to produce the signs creates a toxic dust during production and so precautions must be taken during label production.
There is no evidence of the word Traffolyte being a registered trademark in the UK or America and therefore the word Traffolyte has evolved into more of an umbrella term. Almost any product consisting, of 2 or more multi-coloured engraved plastics and used in the technical or electrical field can now be considered a Traffolyte.
Signs and Labels Direct have been engraving Traffolyte signs since 2012 and have followed the industry leaders in switching to laminated acrylic instead of the phenolic plastic. This helps to keep the cost of the sign low without sacrificing on textile strength or usability.
